The Inspector General (IG) of police nominee Japheth Koome has stated that his leadership will be very strict on alcoholism and drug abuse, especially among the youths.

Speaking when he appeared before the parliamentary vetting committee on November 8, Koome said that Kenya risks losing an entire generation to alcoholism, vowing to do all it takes to minimize the trend.

“Our youths must stop this liking for alochol. We are drinking too much and this must be managed or else we are going to lose a country. I have a passion for this area. Drinking too much alcohol is not the way to go,” said Koome.

“When you approve my nomination, I will not wait for NACADA CEO to visit our office, I will go to his office,”

When asked about money laundering syndicates commonly known as ‘wash wash’, Koome said the police service will continue fighting the vice as it amounts to suppression of the economy.

He regretted that some high ranking members of the society are being implicated in money laundering, terming it as shameful while urging Kenyans to live within their means and shun the greed to get rich.

“It is very unfortunate that even people who are very educated have been caught in this trap to try and get rich quickly. Let’s live within our means. Let us not be in hurry to make millions.” said Koome.
