The Nairobi City County Environmental Compliance and Monitoring Unit has arrested Ruai Quickmart Supermarket manager Mr Nicholas Kinyua Kariuki over alleged illegal waste dumping.

County Director for Environment and Natural Resources Mr Paul Malawi has warned businesses and residents against illegal dumping, insisting that business establishments must show proof of a contract with a garbage collector.

“We mounted an operation through a tip-off from members of the public and confirmed that Ruai Quick Mart Supermarket doesn’t have a waste management plan in their premises. They are giving their waste to the street urchins who dump it on the roadsides and market areas,” said Malawi.

Mr Malawi said the county has embarked on a citywide operation to clear Nairobi of waste in line with Governor Sakaja’s vision of a city of order, dignity, hope and opportunity for all.

Pursuant to County Waste Management Act 2015, illegal dumping attracts a fine of Ksh300,000 for the first offenders and Ksh500,000 to Ksh1,000,000 for repeat offenders.

Mr Malawi mentioned that the County Anti-dumping Unit which has been operational for the last two months has upscaled its operations across the city to ensure a clean and safe city.

“In line with Governor Sakaja’s vision, we want to make Nairobi a green city, devoid of waste. The Governor has committed funds to ensure that we have a waste-free city,” Malawi added.
