The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has deregistered 44 teachers accused of misconduct.

The teachers were removed from the Register of Teachers and prohibited from teaching in any type of educational facility, according to a notice issued by the commission.

The decision was made to streamline the sector ahead of the 49-member task force appointed by President William Ruto, led by Professor Raphael Munavu’s review of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

According to Section 30 of the TSC Act (2012), the commission may have a tutor’s name removed if they are found to be unfit, deceased, suffering from a physical or mental condition, having registered fraudulently, or having committed a sexual or criminal violation.

“Subject to the provisions of this Act, the removal of a teacher’s name from the register shall be notified by the commission to the person by registered mail addressed to his or her last known address,” read part of the TSC Act.

The deregistered tutors may only be reinstated in accordance with the Act after making an appeal to the commission. In the past, TSC penalized organizations that employed unregistered teachers Ksh100,000. In addition, principals were subject to a two-year maximum sentence in prison or both.
