Nairobi City County has issued a directive requiring building owners, tenants, and property management agents in key areas to repaint their premises and upgrade security lighting. The notice, signed by Patrick Analo Akivaga, Chief Officer for Urban Development and Planning, is pursuant to the Physical and Land Use Planning Act No. 13 (2019), Urban Areas and Cities (Amendment) Act (2019), and the Public Health Act (2012).
The directive applies to buildings in the Central Business District (CBD), Westlands Shopping Centre, Upper Hill, and Ngara. According to the statement, affected stakeholders must comply by applying a fresh coat of paint to their buildings and ensuring all security lights are either newly installed or repaired. The mandate took effect immediately upon issuance and is enforceable for a period of 90 days.
“This notice/order takes effect immediately and shall lapse after 90 days, after which the County Government of Nairobi shall commence necessary legal enforcement against those who will not have repainted their buildings and provided security lighting for their premises,” stated the notice.
This move aligns with Nairobi’s urban renewal initiatives under the “Let’s Make Nairobi Work” campaign, focusing on enhancing aesthetic standards and improving safety. By targeting high-traffic areas, the County Government aims to boost business confidence and create an inviting urban environment for residents and visitors alike.
