The Ministry of Health has expressed deep sorrow following the tragic deaths of three individuals in Nakuru County after consuming illicit alcohol. The incident has reignited calls for stricter adherence to safety guidelines surrounding alcohol consumption and awareness about the hazards of unregulated products.
In a statement issued on December 22, 2024, Mary Muthoni Muriuki, Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Health, emphasized the grave dangers posed by unlicensed alcoholic beverages. “Illicit alcohol often contains harmful substances such as methanol, which can result in severe health consequences, including blindness, organ damage, and death,” she stated.
The Ministry urged the public to prioritize their safety by only consuming alcohol that is legally registered and licensed by government agencies. “This ensures that the alcohol has undergone proper quality control and meets safety standards,” Muriuki added.
Consumers were also cautioned against purchasing alcohol from unverified sources, highlighting the risks posed by counterfeit or suspiciously cheap products. Furthermore, the Ministry advised practicing responsible alcohol consumption, particularly during the festive season.
This incident underscores the importance of ongoing nationwide public awareness campaigns led by the Division of Drug and Substance Abuse Control. These initiatives aim to educate the public about the harmful effects of unregulated substances, including novel nicotine and other emerging tobacco products.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives,” the statement concluded.
