The National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) has once again voiced strong criticism of President William Ruto’s administration, continuing its opposition to government policies and actions. In a joint statement , signed by NCCK Chairman Rev. Dr. Elias Otieno Agola and General Secretary Rev. Canon Chris Kinyanjui, the church body likened Kenya’s current state to that of a critically ill patient, emphasizing the nation’s struggles as a result of misleading political narratives.
“The situation in our country is the direct result of our tendency, as the people of Kenya, to listen to and believe the narratives peddled by persons seeking to rise to or hold onto political power. These narratives are often based on lies and falsehoods,” the statement read. The NCCK urged Kenyans to critically evaluate the information they receive, advocating for citizens to verify facts instead of accepting false claims made by politicians. “We appeal to you, Brothers and Sisters, to be seekers of truth. Do not just believe what is said, but take a step to verify if what you have been told is true,” they added.
In addition, the NCCK sharply criticized Members of Parliament (MPs) for failing to hold the government accountable. The church body accused MPs of betraying the public by becoming complicit in enforcing oppressive laws and policies. “Instead of representing the people, MPs have become tools carrying out the work of the Executive. Rather than providing oversight, they act as cheerleaders in oppressing the public,” stated the statement. The NCCK urged voters to use their constitutional right to recall MPs who fail to meet their expectations, stating, “The right of recall is a disciplinary measure granted to us by the Constitution.”
Furthermore, the church expressed disappointment over the government’s failure to reconstitute the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). The NCCK described the delay as an insult to Kenyans and a threat to democracy, calling for urgent action to resolve the issue. “We must reclaim our democracy,” the council concluded, urging citizens to demand the reconstitution of the IEBC within two weeks.
