Kenya has been re-elected to the Council of the International Telecommunications Union(ITU).

In a statement dated October 3, 2022, the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) said that the announcement was made during the Plenipotential Conference held in Bucharest Romania.

Founded in 1985, ITU is the UN specialized agency responsible for matters related to ICT.

Kenya garnered 146 votes, the highest in the African region, to secure a seat on the 48-member council. Other African countries elected include Ghana, Egypt, Tanzania, Algeria, Morocco, Senegal, Mauritius, Australia, and South Africa.

“The results demonstrate that Kenya continues to enjoy the trust and confidence of the international community to provide meaningful leadership in the advancement of the digital economy. This is also an inspiration for us to do more to deliver dividends of digital transformation to every citizen in the country,” CA stated.

Kenya was invited to the ITU Council, one of the main decision-making bodies of the UN agency for ICT, on the eve of its sessions, and presented its case there for a new four-year mandate. Kenya has been at the forefront, driving international discussions on ICTs and significantly advancing the ITU’s activities.

“The nation has established a solid name for itself both locally and internationally as a pioneer in advancing digital access and inclusivity, as demonstrated by ground-breaking inventions and initiatives to improve everyone’s access to communications services,” CA added.
