The National Police Service (NPS) has issued a statement addressing information circulating on social media about potential public demonstrations scheduled for Thursday, November 21. The police reassured the public of their safety and emphasized that no formal notification for such protests has been received.
In its statement, the NPS reiterated its acknowledgment of Kenyans’ constitutional rights to peaceful assembly, picketing, and petitioning of public offices, provided such activities are conducted unarmed and within the framework of the law. However, it reminded organizers of the legal requirement to notify the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at least three days, but no more than 14 days, in advance of any planned demonstration.
This advance notification, as stipulated in the Public Order Act, ensures that adequate security and safety measures can be put in place to protect both participants and the general public during such events. The police clarified that no such notification had been submitted as of the date of their statement.
“Law-abiding Kenyans are urged to go on with their daily activities without fear,” said Dr. Resila Onyango, PhD, HSC, speaking on behalf of the Inspector-General of the NPS. She emphasized the police’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens across the country.
The NPS further encouraged responsible use of social media to avoid creating unwarranted panic or disruptions to normalcy.
