National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has been appointed to the advisory panel of the Conference of Speakers and Presidents of African Legislatures (CoSPAL), an organization dedicated to unifying Africa’s legislative leaders. Wetang’ula announced this honor on his official X account on Sunday morning, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve in this prestigious role.

CoSPAL, established in 2020, focuses on enhancing collaboration and cooperation among Speakers and Presidents of Parliaments and National Assemblies across Africa. The organization seeks to address common challenges, formulate joint strategies, and mobilize collective action to promote the continent’s development and unity. In his statement, Wetang’ula noted that CoSPAL provides a valuable platform for African legislative leaders to deliberate on and address pressing issues collectively.

The Speaker was represented by Ugenya MP David Ochieng, a member of the Speaker’s panel, at the recent CoSPAL conference, which was held in Ghana. The conference served as CoSPAL’s 2nd General Assembly and took place from Friday to Sunday, drawing approximately 120 participants, including 15 Speakers and Presidents of National Legislatures, 30 Deputy Speakers and Presidents, as well as Clerks and other parliamentary staff.

In his statement, Wetang’ula highlighted the significance of CoSPAL’s mission. He commented, “CoSPAL aims to unify Africa’s legislative leaders in addressing shared challenges across the continent.” This focus on unity reflects the growing commitment among African leaders to work together toward the continent’s progress.

The assembly provided a platform for members to discuss collaborative approaches to development, governance, and legislative challenges. It underscored the collective determination of African parliaments to drive change on the continent.

CoSPAL’s role in facilitating these exchanges was further emphasized by Wetang’ula, who remarked, “The appointment to the advisory panel of CoSPAL is a testament to the growing role of Kenya’s Parliament in regional and continental affairs.”
