Nine students from St Aloys Mayenya Secondary School in Kisumu East sub-county are receiving treatment in hospital after being injured when a storm ravaged their school on the evening of September 25, 2024. The injuries occurred after strong winds, accompanied by heavy rains, tore through classrooms, causing significant damage.

The students were admitted to St Elizabeth Hospital in Chiga. Others who sustained minor injuries were treated and discharged.

Speaking about the incident, school principal Judith Atieno said the storm caused extensive destruction. “The thunderstorm destroyed two classrooms and the staff room. We are grateful that all students are now out of danger, though some were left in shock,” she said.

Ms. Atieno assured parents that the situation is under control but acknowledged that the damage to the school was substantial, with the roofs of affected classrooms completely blown off. “The heavy rains left a trail of destruction. We are appealing for help from well-wishers, the county, and the national government to help us restore normalcy and resume learning activities,” she added.

Local authorities have been notified of the incident, and the school is looking for immediate support to rebuild and ensure the safety of students.

Parents and members of the community are now rallying to assist the school in recovering from the damage. The affected students are reportedly in stable condition, but the incident has caused widespread concern among parents, particularly regarding the safety of students during extreme weather events.

The county government is expected to assess the damage and consider relief measures to assist the school in resuming its operations. Meanwhile, school authorities have reassured parents that they are taking every necessary step to ensure student safety going forward.
