International Criminal Court (ICC) suspect and Kenyan-based lawyer Paul Gicheru has died aged 50.

Gicheru was accused of compromising witnesses that were to testify against President William Ruto in the cases following the 2007 post-election violence.

Mr Gicheru had in November 2020 surrendered to the authorities of the Netherlands pursuant to an arrest warrant issued by Pre-Trial Chamber II of ICC.

The arrest warrant against Mr Gicheru and Philip Kipkoech Bett was issued under seal on 10 March 2015 and unsealed on 10 September 2015.

The court had issued arrest warrants for three Kenyans — Walter Barasa, Paul Gicheru and Phillip Bett — on charges of obstructing the course of justice.

The charges against him were confirmed on July 15, 2021, with the Chamber noting that Mr. Gicheru worked together with others to undermine the cases against William Ruto and journalist Joshua Sang.

Gicheru pleaded not guilty to the charges against him with the closing statements from both the prosecution and defence being delivered on June 27, 2022.

The chamber was yet to pronounce its decision on the conviction or acquittal of Gicheru.
