The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has suspended 10 cooking oil and fat brands from the market.

As a result, KEBS directed that the affected brands must be removed from the shelves of all retailers.

The Standards Act, Chapter 496 of the Laws of Kenya requires KEBS  to advance standardisation in business and industry; To organise for or provide facilities for the testing and calibration of scientific equipment, such as instruments, gauges, and apparatus.

“In order to assess their degree of accuracy in comparison with standards accepted by the Minister upon the Council’s advice and to issue certifications in this regard; to set up procedures or offer facilities for the inspection and testing of goods, as well as any materials or substances from which they may be made, produced, processed, or otherwise handled,” the Act states in part.

Among the suspended brands include Rina, Salit, Tilly, Top Fry, Bahari Fry, Fresh Fri, Fresh Fri with Garlic, Fry Mate, and Gold n’ Pure Olive.

According to the standards authority, the affected brands must undergo testing and approval before being reinstated on the market.

The prohibition was carried out following examinations by KEBS on samples obtained from the oil brands, which revealed that they did not meet the requirements of the relevant product standard, which is KS EAS 769: KS 2019 Fortified Edible Oils and Fats Specification.
