The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has released a seven-day weather forecast, warning residents in several regions to brace for possible heavy rainfall.

The forecast, covering the period from September 10 to September 16, 2024, predicts varying weather conditions, including afternoon showers, thunderstorms, and cloudy skies across different parts of the country.

According to the KMD, the Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and parts of the Rift Valley are expected to receive significant rainfall. The affected areas include Kisii, Nyamira, Nandi, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Busia, Migori, Narok, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin-Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, and West Pokot Counties.

In these regions, the mornings will feature sunny intervals, followed by afternoon showers and thunderstorms. Nights are expected to be partly cloudy, with occasional light showers in some areas.

“Residents in these counties should prepare for afternoon showers and thunderstorms, which could lead to flash floods in low-lying areas,” the KMD warned in its statement. The department also advised residents to stay informed and monitor weather updates closely.

For residents in north-western Kenya, including Turkana and Samburu Counties, the forecast indicates mostly sunny daytime conditions, while the nights will be partly cloudy. Although these regions are not expected to experience heavy rainfall, cooler temperatures are likely during the night.

The Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka-Nithi Counties, can expect cloudy mornings with sunny intervals as the day progresses. There is a chance of light afternoon showers in some areas, with partly cloudy nights expected.

“Even though significant rainfall is forecasted in some areas, dry spells are also expected in parts of north-western and eastern Kenya,” KMD stated.

The department urges residents in areas prone to flooding to take necessary precautions. “With varying weather conditions expected, it’s crucial to remain vigilant and prepared for both dry periods and sudden downpours,” the statement concluded.
