President William Ruto has announced a significant initiative to improve the mobility of National Government Administrative Officers (NGAO) by providing 1,000 electric vehicles. The move, aimed at enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of government operations at the grassroots level, was revealed during a meeting with NGAO officials in Nairobi on Tuesday.
Accompanied by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki, President Ruto underscored the critical role that NGAO officers play in maintaining law and order, promoting national cohesion, and administering justice across the country. He emphasized that the NGAO is a vital extension of the Executive, integral to the governance and development of Kenya.
“There should be no doubt whatsoever as to the place of NGAO in the governance of Kenya. The constitution itself speaks to the configuration of this outfit in a manner that supports the governance of our country even in the context of our devolved system of governance,” Ruto stated.
To further empower NGAO officers in their duties, President Ruto announced the rollout of a program to provide them with electric vehicles. This initiative is part of a broader government effort to modernize key institutions, following similar measures in the police service and the National Youth Service (NYS).
The president noted that the electric vehicles, once fully charged, would cover over 300 kilometers, eliminating the need for fuel and ensuring uninterrupted mobility for the officers. He also mentioned that chargers would be provided with the vehicles, allowing them to recharge while parked at their offices.
“We are working on the first 1,000 vehicles, maybe progressively every year, until we have every officer at a certain level with a car; we will go in the direction of electric motor vehicles. So you will not struggle with looking for fuel. We will also give you a charger so that when you are in the office, the car charges outside to enhance your movements,” President Ruto explained.
