Kenya has officially put forward Raila Odinga, former Prime Minister and veteran politician, as its candidate for the chairmanship of the African Union Commission (AUC) in the upcoming February 2025 elections.
The nomination, submitted on Monday in Addis Ababa, marks Kenya’s first bid for the top continental position since the Organisation of African Unity’s founding in 1963 and its subsequent evolution into the African Union.
Dr. Korir Sing’Oei, Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs, presented the candidature to the Dean of the Eastern Region, Mauritius Ambassador Raj Busgeeeth, adhering to the principle of inter-regional rotation for the chairperson role.
“Kenya has offered the Hon. Raila Odinga for the position of AUC Chairperson. This decision is informed by Mr. Odinga’s Pan-Africanist credentials, his suitability, his vast networks across Africa and his proven competence to lead AUC,” the statement read.
Odinga, a prominent figure in Kenyan politics, brings extensive experience to the table. His career includes serving as Prime Minister, holding various ministerial portfolios, and most recently, acting as the High Representative of the AUC Chairperson on Infrastructure.
The nomination comes at a critical juncture for the continent, which faces economic challenges, environmental issues, conflicts, and geopolitical pressures. Kenya’s foreign affairs department emphasized Odinga’s vision for addressing these concerns, outlining nine priority areas including African integration, economic transformation, and climate action.
“Odinga’s key focus and commitment is to harness Africa’s rich and vast human and natural resources to propel Africa towards a new era of shared prosperity,” the statement declared.
Kenya’s bid for the AUC leadership position aligns with its active role in continental affairs, including financial support for AU initiatives and involvement in peace and security efforts across Africa.
The election for the new AUC Chairperson is scheduled to take place during the 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union in February 2025.
Kenya is seeking support from all AU member states for Odinga’s candidacy.
