PNU to rethink alliance as Munya questions ODM’s position with government

The Party of National Unity (PNU) leader, Peter Munya, announced today that the party will convene on Thursday to discuss its future relationship with the Azimio One Kenya Coalition. This meeting follows recent claims that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party, led by Raila Odinga, has aligned itself with the government.

Munya highlighted the inconsistency of ODM’s position, stating, “They can’t be in the government and still be in opposition. If they have decided to side with the government, those of us who want to remain in the opposition have to distance ourselves as we still want to fight for Kenyans.”

His remarks underline the necessity of a clear demarcation between the government’s role and the opposition’s responsibility to hold it accountable.

The PNU leader expressed his best wishes to ODM but emphasized the need for a definitive decision to clarify the political landscape. Munya reiterated that having an opposition party is a constitutional provision, vital for the health of Kenya’s democracy.

He stated, “I think I’m better off working with the people of Kenya to bring the changes that we require than going in there to strengthen a government that people have a lot of issues with.”

The upcoming meeting is expected to address the implications of ODM’s perceived alignment with the government and how PNU should navigate its position moving forward. Munya’s stance reflects a commitment to maintaining a robust opposition that champions the interests and concerns of the Kenyan people.

Observers anticipate that the PNU’s decision could significantly impact the political dynamics within the Azimio One Kenya Coalition and the broader opposition landscape. Munya’s call for clarity is seen as an effort to preserve the integrity and purpose of the opposition, ensuring that it remains a formidable force in advocating for accountability and reforms.
