OPINION: Business is not about being your own boss

This is what I wanted to write as the topic, but well, the mind records affirmations only. People, more so the youth, are attracted to business because of the notion that they will become their own boss. However, a closer look reveals that everything is not as glamorous as it seems, and so is business.

Business is fundamentally about solving people’s problems. If this is not happening, then no business is taking place. Thus, it is more about listening to people and letting their needs and wants guide your actions, making them your boss.

For instance, if you introduce a product into the market, you have to listen to the customer’s perspective on what you are selling. You must carefully consider every complaint and suggestion they put across. Additionally, there is the external environment that will always influence the business.

This includes government policies, the stability of the nation, general market conditions, and prices among others. Essentially, businesses are not about being your own boss. They are about being the people’s servant while benefiting the most from it.

There should be a general feeling of consideration and urgency in the way clients are treated, demonstrating that they are valued and their feedback is of importance. This way, they are more likely to market your  business out there as they share their positive experiences with others.

Moreover, understanding that business is a dynamic and ever-evolving landscape is crucial. Businesses must stay adaptable and responsive to changes in consumer behavior, technological advancements, and market trends. This continuous learning and adaptation further underscore that business is about serving others effectively and efficiently.

In conclusion, while the allure of being your own boss might attract many to entrepreneurship, the reality is that successful business is rooted in serving others. By prioritizing the needs and wants of clients and adapting to external influences, businesses can thrive and grow.
