The driver of the Easy Coach bus involved in a fatal accident along the Kisumu-Kakamega highway, resulting in the death of a student from Chavakali Boys High School and injuring several others, has appeared before a Kisumu court.

During the hearing at Winam Law Court presided over by Principal Magistrate D.K Mtai, it was revealed that on April 1, Onyango was driving at excessive speed, resulting in the accident that claimed the life of Joseph Mwadulo.

Regarding the other nine charges, the court learned that the accused intentionally applied an emergency brake, causing the vehicle to veer and overturn, resulting in injuries to nine students.

George Onyango Riako denied 10 charges, including causing the student’s death and injuring nine others. He was granted bail set at KES 200,000 in cash or KES 500,000 bond.

Prior to this, the defendant’s attorney had requested the court to consider fair bond conditions, emphasizing that his client posed no flight risk and was committed to attending all court proceedings. In response, Mtai directed the prosecution to provide the defendant’s lawyer with witness statements.

The case is scheduled for mention on April 25, 2024, during which a hearing date will be determined. A total of 23 students are yet to record statements with the police and there is a likelihood that the ODPP will later amend the charge sheet to include their statements. The driver was reported missing on the accident scene immediately after the accident.
