Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki declared that Wednesday, April 10, 2024, will be observed as a public holiday in Kenya. In an official announcement made through a gazette notice on Tuesday, April 9, Kindiki stated that the public holiday is designated to commemorate Idd-ul-Fitr.

“IT IS notified for the general information of the public that, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 2 (1) of the Public Holidays Act. The Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration declares that Wednesday, the 10th April, 2024, shall be a Public Holiday to mark Idd-ul-Fitr,” stated the notice.

Idd ul-Fitr, also referred to as the “Festival of Breaking the Fast,” commences upon the sighting of the new moon. Muslims gather to perform a special congregational prayer known as the Salat al-Eid. Following the prayer, Muslims exchange greetings of “Eid Mubarak” (Blessed Eid) and share gifts and food with their loved ones, including family and friends.

It marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, which began on March 11, 2024.  Idd ul-Fitr is sighted as a time of joy, reflection, and gratitude for Muslims around the world, marking the completion of a month of fasting and spiritual growth.

Part of Eid ul-Fitr tradition involves a charitable practice called Zakat al-Fitr, where Muslims are obligated to donate a designated amount of money or food to those who are less fortunate before the Eid prayer. This practice aims to ensure that everyone can partake in the celebrations and have sufficient resources to enjoy the festivities.
