Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has disclosed the implementation of green-colored number plates designated for owners of electric vehicles (EVs).
The announcement was made during the inauguration of the e-mobility policy at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) on Wednesday, March 27. Murkomen specified that these specialized number plates will also be available for Kenyan owners of electric motorcycles.
He further stated that individuals with existing number plates of various shades of green will be required to request replacement plates.
Presently, green plates are utilized by county enforcement officers, commonly referred to as “kanjos.” Murkomen clarified that the introduction of these distinct number plates aims to facilitate the easier identification of electric vehicles and motorcycles on the roads.
Additionally, he emphasized the Ministry’s intention to promote the adoption of EVs in the country, aligning with governmental plans to introduce further incentives for environmentally friendly technologies.
“All electric vehicles will be assigned green number plates. Owners of vehicles with the previous green plates are advised to apply for replacements. Our objective is to incentivize EV ownership. We will collaborate with governors to prioritize affordable parking spaces for EVs,” he declared.
Murkomen revealed that the rollout of these number plates will commence subsequent to the official signing of requisite documentation. Furthermore, he outlined plans for the Ministry to install charging infrastructure at its headquarters to spearhead the uptake of electric vehicles.
He indicated that procurement of the necessary infrastructure would occur progressively, suggesting potential extension to other governmental ministries. Government data indicates nearly 3,000 registered electric vehicles in the country.
