Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has on Wednesday revealed plans for the acquisition of 4000 acres of the Chakama Ranch, the site of the Shakahola deaths, to establish a memorial.
Kindiki emphasized that this memorial area would be dedicated to interring unidentified bodies and serving as a solemn reminder of the atrocities perpetrated.
Addressing the public in Kilifi, Kindiki outlined the government’s intentions, stating, “As a government, we will acquire the 4000 acres where the principal suspect conducted his activities. This area will be enclosed as the judicial process unfolds, allowing courts access to the crime scene. Additionally, the remainder of the Chakama ranch, totaling over 50,000 acres, was officially removed from protected status last week.”
Furthermore, Kindiki disclosed the revocation of the designation of the remaining land as a crime scene, leaving only the aforementioned 4000 acres under investigation.
The Cabinet Secretary asserted that government officials found negligent would face repercussions once an injunction against the presidentially appointed commission of inquiry, led by President William Ruto, is lifted.
“Any officer found culpable, whether through action or inaction, will be held accountable,” Kindiki affirmed.
