The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has issued a public notice stating that the fertilizer product “GPC Original Plus Organic Fertilizer” manufactured by SBL Innovate Manufacturers Limited does not meet the requirements of the Kenyan standard for organic fertilizers.

In a strongly worded statement, KEBS emphasized its role in “ensuring product quality for our farmers” and maintaining consumer trust through enforcement of quality standards.

“The product trading by name ‘GPC Original Plus Organic Fertilizer’ manufactured by SBL Innovate Manufacturers Limited does NOT meet the requirements of the Kenyan Standards for Organic Fertilizer KS 2290:2018,” the notice stated.

KEBS was clear to distinguish the substandard product from government-subsidized fertilizers, stating “The GPC Original Plus Organic Fertilizer is not part of the government fertilizer subsidy programme.”

The quality assurance body urged vigilance from Kenyan farmers and the wider public. “If you happen to come across a product that does not meet the required standards, we kindly request that you notify us immediately,” the statement read.

As part of its “WajibikaNaKEBS” campaign, KEBS provided multiple channels for the public to report suspected substandard goods, including a toll-free hotline, email, and official mobile app.

“Your attentiveness is crucial in safeguarding the well-being of our agricultural community,” KEBS said, reaffirming its commitment to product safety and consumer protection.

KEBS has not indicated if regulatory action will be taken against SBL Innovate Manufacturers Limited regarding the non-compliant fertilizer product. The bureau continues to advocate for public participation in identifying substandard goods through its whistleblower initiative.
