The burial of Kelvin Kiptum, the record holder in marathon running, has been rescheduled from Saturday, February 24, to Friday, February 23.

This decision was made to synchronize with the schedule of President William Ruto, as stated by a representative of Kiptum’s family.

The family spokesperson clarified that the adjustment was necessary due to the President’s planned trip to Namibia on Saturday, although this information had not been officially confirmed by State House.

The spokesperson emphasized that the burial would be a State function, with the President in attendance, thus necessitating the change in date.

President Ruto is expected to be present at the burial before departing for Namibia, where the late Namibian President Hage Geingob is to be laid to rest on February 24, following his passing on February 4.

President Ruto expressed his condolences for Geingob, highlighting his commitment to African unity and the continent’s global prominence. He also announced Kenya’s tribute to Geingob, including the flying of flags at half-mast.

Additionally, President Ruto has been personally involved in ensuring a fitting farewell for Kiptum, who tragically lost his life in a road accident on Monday, February 12. Ruto praised Kiptum’s remarkable achievements in the world of sports, expressing sorrow over the premature loss of such a talented athlete.

In a gesture of respect, President Ruto fulfilled Kiptum’s final wish by overseeing the construction of a house for his family, ensuring their well-being in the wake of their loss.
