Kenya aims to attract a larger number of tourists from West Africa by providing tailored business and leisure travel options aligned with their preferences.

John Chirchir, the Acting CEO of the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB), emphasized that targeting this market is a crucial element in the strategy to broaden the tourism sources and enhance the country’s destination offerings.

He made these remarks during a gathering that signifies the commencement of a series of roadshows scheduled for Nigerian and Ghanaian cities of Lagos, Abuja, and Accra. Chirchir highlighted that Nigeria and Ghana registered growth rates of 6% and 8% in 2023, indicating their potential as viable markets for Kenya.

The Kenya Tourism Board and Kenya Airways are spearheading a delegation of over 15 travel trade firms for in-market activations scheduled from February 5th to 9th, 2024, in Nigeria and Ghana. These events are anticipated to engage more than 400 trade partners.

Chirchir emphasized that Africa, with its approximately 1.4 billion people, is a significant market for trade, business, and tourism. He highlighted the commencement of the team’s focus on West Africa, starting with roadshows in emerging markets such as Accra, Lagos, and Abuja.

“During the activation, we hope that the 17 Kenyan trade will have business meetings and direct engagements with potential travellers from the three cities. We cannot ignore the potential that the African market has for tourism,” he said.

He also noted that the frequent flights connecting African cities, the relaxed travel restrictions, and the availability of Electronic Travel Authorization would facilitate easier access to Kenya for visitors.
