Universities and colleges must submit revised curricula for accreditation by March 1, conforming to ongoing reforms in the education sector and the shift from the 8-4-4 to the 2-6-3-3-3 cycle.

According to Professor Mike Kuria, Secretary of the Commission for University Education (CUE), the Commission has established guidelines for the review of Teacher Education Programmes (TEPs). These guidelines aim to assist universities in aligning their TEP curricula with the Basic Education Curriculum Framework (BECF).

In a communication addressed to vice-chancellors and principals of university colleges, Prof. Kuria noted that the Commission has initiated the compilation of frameworks, rules, guidelines, and resources to facilitate the seamless transition of university curricula to competency-based education (CBE).

The development of these guidelines involved thorough engagement with relevant stakeholders, including public participation and sensitization forums. The purpose of the letter is to convey the guidelines for the review of TEPs for implementation, as applicable.

Universities are expected to conduct a needs assessment in collaboration with relevant stakeholders during the curriculum review. Additionally, they should establish suitable academic resources, collaborative arrangements, and administrative structures and strategies to support TEPs under CBE.

The guidelines are applicable to the review of curricula for existing university teacher education programs at both bachelor’s and postgraduate diploma levels, encompassing TEPs in all delivery modes—face-to-face, online, and blended. Furthermore, the guidelines will be used in conjunction with the relevant University Standards and Guidelines.

“The guidelines specify the essential information to be included in a revised curriculum for an existing university teacher education program, and the structure of the revised curriculum should adhere to the standard format provided in these guidelines,” as stated in the guidelines.
