The National Treasury released KES 31.34 billion on Wednesday in anticipation of the imminent school reopening next week.

According to the Treasury, the allocation breakdown is as follows:

  • State Department for Basic Education: KES 4.74 billion for Free Primary Education, Term 1.
  • State Department for Basic Education: KES 7.60 billion for Capitation for Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) for Term 1.
  • State Department for Basic Education: KES 2.80 billion for school examination and invigilation fees.
  • State Department for Basic Education: KES 16.20 billion for Free Day Secondary Education.

This disbursement of funds is intended to provide support for various aspects of the education sector as schools gear up to resume activities next week.

This comes a day after opposition leader Raila Odinga threatened to move to court over the capitation for schools.

Raila had accused the government of subjecting children and teachers to undue suffering by withholding the funds.

“We have tasked our MPs to push, and we also plan to go to court to force the Ministry of Education to release full capitation to both primary and secondary schools so that schools can start the year smoothly,” Raila said in his New Year message.
