Government Spokesman Isaac Mwaura has released a press statement from the El Nino emergency response center on the current situation of the ongoing rains.

In the statement released on Thursday, Mwaura said the current situation remains stable and has shown significant progress, and that the number of internally displaced persons (IDP) has significantly reduced from 170 to 95.

“Presently, 67,255 individuals remain displaced, a reduction from the previous count of 545,515. We expect further reductions in both the number of camps and displaced persons, particularly as camps hosted in schools are being vacated,” he said.

Additionally, Mwaura said that efforts to deliver ongoing relief supplies to the affected counties continue unabated, and as of now, all roads are accessible except for the Masalani self-anchored suspension bridge.

Mwaura noted that the management of the cholera situation in Lamu and Tana River Counties has been effective, with no new deaths reported in the last five days.

“The cumulative cholera-related fatalities remain at four. To enhance further relief support in Tana River County, the World Food Programme (FP) helicopter relocated from Wajir to Garissa yesterday in readiness for relief distribution within the Tana Delta area,” Maura added.

Furthermore, the weather forecast indicates anticipated rain in the southern regions of the country, extending to several other areas starting this Saturday. Most parts of north-eastern and north-western Kenya are likely to experience generally dry conditions.

Strong South Easterly winds exceeding 25 knots are expected over parts of Turkana and Marsabit counties,” he added.
