Kenya has implemented groundbreaking (SOPs) to address human trafficking and tackle serious human rights violations.
Orchestrated by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) and backed by a unified Task Force, the SOPs are positioned as a pivotal tool for empowering investigators and prosecutors in the effective combat against human rights abuses. Their execution is anticipated to bolster investigative and prosecutorial endeavors, fostering accountability and a rigorous approach to addressing severe human rights violations.
The SOPs are designed to streamline the investigation and prosecution of human rights-related offenses, particularly those perpetrated by law enforcement officers. Noordin Haji, the Director of Public Prosecutions, expressed confidence in the SOPs, acclaiming them as an invaluable resource for investigators and prosecutors in their mission to confront grave human rights violations.
In an official statement, Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji underscored the significance of the SOPs, characterizing them as a historic advancement for the criminal justice system. Haji conveyed optimism about the transformative impact of these procedures, emphasizing the unprecedented collaboration among essential entities within the justice system. The SOPs are poised to bridge existing gaps and promote synergy between the ODPP, Independent Policing and Oversight Authority (IPOA), and National Police Service (NPS), with the aim of optimizing the criminal justice system’s efficiency in addressing human rights violations and related offenses.
The SOPs provide a comprehensive blueprint delineating the framework for coordination among law enforcement agencies, offering guidelines for investigating and prosecuting human rights-related violations, primarily those involving police officers. Mr. Haji highlighted, “The objective of these SOPs is to ensure effective coordination between ODPP, IPOA, and NPS to optimize the use of the criminal justice system in dealing with human rights violations and related offenses.”
Joseph Motari, PS Social Protection, commended this initiative as a milestone achievement in Kenya’s multifaceted efforts to combat human trafficking. He stated, “The launch of standard operating procedures to combat human trafficking marks a significant milestone in Kenya’s ongoing efforts to combat human trafficking, demonstrating a united front in the fight against this global scourge.”
