KCB Tanzania Limited, a subsidiary of the Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) Group, has recently secured a substantial investment of 20.0 million Euros from the European Investment Bank (EIB) in the third quarter of 2023. This significant financial injection has had a profound impact on the bank’s financial health and strategic expansion plans.

The 20 million Euros received from the EIB has been instrumental in strengthening KCB Tanzania’s long-term capital base, coming at a critical time to address a funding gap. These funds have enabled KCB Tanzania to bolster its balance sheet, facilitating growth in key financial areas.

In the nine months leading up to September, KCB Tanzania witnessed significant growth in its loan book, surging by 38.0% to reach a total of Kshs 50.6 billion (Tshs 836.6 billion). This growth underscores the bank’s commitment to effectively serve the financial needs of its customer base. Additionally, the bank’s asset base expanded by 31.0%, reaching Kshs 82.3 billion (Tshs 1.3 trillion).

The financial impact of this funding infusion is evident in KCB Tanzania’s pre-tax profits, which saw a remarkable 77.0% surge, reaching Kshs 2.3 billion (Tshs 39.5 billion) during the review period. This marked a significant improvement from the Kshs 1.3 billion (Tshs 22.3 billion) reported in the same period the previous year.

The growth in pre-tax profits is mainly attributed to increased income from operations. The bank reported a notable improvement in net income, with a 38.6% increase to Kshs 6.9 billion (Tshs 114.8 billion), up from Kshs 5 billion (Tshs 82.8 billion). This impressive financial performance was driven by a 35.0% surge in interest income and a 52.0% increase in non-interest funded income.

A notable achievement during this period for KCB Tanzania is the enhancement of its asset quality. The percentage of non-performing loans to gross loans significantly decreased, from 4.7% in September 2022 to 1.7% currently, indicating the bank’s prudent lending practices and effective risk management.

KCB Tanzania is one of six regional units within the KCB Group, with subsidiaries in South Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The KCB Group has been actively exploring opportunities for acquisitions, demonstrating its commitment to regional growth.

KCB Tanzania’s strategic growth aligns with the broader expansion plans of the KCB Group, which seeks to solidify its presence in the East and Central African region.
