Two employees of Wells Fargo bank stole KES 94 million Monday morning while transporting money from the bank’s vault to a Family Bank branch in downtown Nairobi, according to a police report filed at the Akila Police Station in the Langata subcounty of Nairobi.

The Wells Fargo employees – identified as Daniel Mungai, the crew commander, and driver Anthony Nduiki – picked up the cash around 6 a.m. as part of their normal duties transporting money between banks, said George Jaramba, Wells Fargo’s Nairobi investigation manager.

But this time, after loading the money into their armored Isuzu Canter truck, Mungai and Nduiki disappeared without the required police escort, Jaramba reported.

“The money was collected from Wells Fargo VAULT destined to Family bank Kenyatta Avenue. The money was for Quickmart,” read the police report.

Several hours later, police found the abandoned Isuzu truck at a farm in Nairobi’s South C neighborhood, but the cash was gone. The report valued the stolen money at 94 million Kenyan shillings.

Police officials said they have launched a broad search for the two suspects. “The main sitrep (situation report) to follow,” the police report said.
