WASREB condemns vandalism, calls for dialogue in Nyeri water dispute

The Water Services Regulatory Board (WASREB) has strongly condemned the destruction of property belonging to Othaya-Mukurwe-Ini Water Company in Nyeri County, terming it a violation of governance principles and a threat to essential services. The incident, which took place on March 21, 2025, involved the unlawful destruction of office premises, equipment, and infrastructure.

In a press statement released on March 25, WASREB acknowledged the grievances raised by consumers within the service area but insisted that such acts of vandalism undermine the rule of law, sustainable development, and human rights. “While we recognize the right of consumers to express their grievances, we strongly condemn the unlawful destruction of office premises, equipment, and infrastructure,” the regulator stated.

The regulator urged all stakeholders to engage in constructive dialogue and peaceful resolution mechanisms rather than resorting to acts of violence. “WASREB urges all stakeholders to engage in constructive dialogue and to seek peaceful and lawful avenues for addressing their concerns,” the statement added.

WASREB has called on authorities to conduct thorough investigations and ensure that those responsible for the destruction are held accountable. “We call upon the relevant authorities to conduct thorough investigations and ensure that those responsible for these unlawful acts are held accountable,” the regulator emphasized.

Additionally, the agency appealed to the public to report any illegal activities to the appropriate authorities and to refrain from violence or vandalism.

Reaffirming its commitment to ensuring access to sustainable and fairly priced water services, WASREB emphasized its willingness to engage with both consumers and the County Government of Nyeri to address concerns transparently.

“WASREB remains committed to ensuring that water services are accessible, sustainable, and fairly priced,” the regulator stated, pledging to facilitate dialogue and policy solutions to prevent future disruptions.
