Former KDF commander Lieutenant General Walter Koipaton Raria has assumed office as the chairperson of the KWS board.

The Ag. Director General, Dr. Erustus Kanga, officially welcomed the Board of Trustees Chairman, Lt. Gen. (Rtd) Walter Raria Koipaton to KWS HQs on Thursday, January 5, 2022.

The Chair BoT held meetings with the senior management and staff before presiding over a tree-planting exercise in line with the presidential directive of growing 15 billion trees by 2032.

He commended the staff for the good work they have been doing and urged them to work in synergy and excel in service delivery as per the Wildlife  Conservation  & Management Act, KWS Strategic Plan, and government agenda.

During his service, Koipaton held a variety of command, staff, and instructional positions at several Kenya Defence Forces establishments.

Between 1994 and 1995, he was the Officer Commanding Cadet Wing. He has held positions in staff including Staff Officer at the Kenya Army Headquarters, Military Assistant to the Army Commander, Military Assistant to the Chief of General Staff, and Provost Marshall.

He oversaw the formation of the 6 Brigade while serving as commander in 2012, and the Brigade was later deployed to Somalia between 2013 and 2014.

Koipaton has also participated in peacekeeping missions for the African Union and the United Nations, serving as the Kenyan Battalion’s commanding officer in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE) and as adjutant for the UN mission in Yugoslavia.
