The Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA) signed an agreement with Everstrong Capital LLC on Thursday. This event coincided with President Ruto’s state visit to the United States, highlighting the strategic importance of this partnership. The Usahihi Expressway project, estimated to cost KES 470.0 bn (USD 3.6 bn), will feature a six-lane dual carriageway, setting a new benchmark for road construction in Africa

The project received approval from the National Assembly last year, underlining the government’s commitment to modernizing Kenya’s road network through a public-private partnership (PPP) model. The expressway, upon completion, will be the largest toll road project on the African continent. The construction is expected to take three to four years and will be self-financed through toll revenue, ensuring its sustainability and financial viability.

One of the primary goals of the Usahihi Expressway is to alleviate congestion, thereby facilitating faster transportation of people and goods. This is particularly crucial for the route between Nairobi and Mombasa, two of Kenya’s most significant cities. Currently, the travel time between these cities is approximately 10 hours. With the new expressway, this travel time is expected to be reduced to just 4.5 hours, representing a significant improvement in efficiency and convenience for commuters and transporters alike.

The construction and eventual operation of the Usahihi Expressway are poised to offer numerous benefits to the neighboring communities. Job opportunities will arise, both during the construction phase and through ongoing maintenance and operational roles once the expressway is completed. This influx of employment will have a positive impact on local economies, promoting business activities and increasing economic activity in the region.

Moreover, the Usahihi Expressway is expected to bolster Kenya’s status as a major economic hub in Africa. By improving transportation infrastructure, the project will enhance trade and commerce, making the region more attractive to investors and businesses. The expressway will not only facilitate the movement of goods within Kenya but also improve connectivity with other East African nations, fostering regional economic integration.

The agreement between KENHA and Everstrong Capital LLC marks an important step in Kenya’s infrastructure development. The Usahihi Expressway promises to transform transportation between Nairobi and Mombasa, offering numerous economic and social benefits. The project will stand as a testament to Kenya’s commitment to modernization and economic growth, positioning the country as a key player in Africa’s future development.
