The Need to Champion Domestic Tourism in Kenya

The Kenya Tourism Board of Kenya has urged Kenyans to champion domestic travel, take on new experiences and also support the growth of the local tourism industry. The Chairperson of the tourism board, Mr Francis Gichaba, explained the benefits of domestic tourism in supporting local communities and economies. A campaign on “You Deserve A Holiday”, which was launched a year ago, has so far sold over 100,000 bed nights and generated a revenue of over Kshs1 billion. The campaign has achieved a significant milestone and has more potential for exploration. It has influenced the growth of local communities and towns in various areas of the country.

Since its inception in June 2022, the campaign has successfully partnered with more than 20 tourism industry stakeholders like tour operators, airlines and accommodation providers. These partnerships have led to comprehensive travel packages designed to offer smooth experiences for local travellers. The campaign also targets to expand further to potential areas within the local markets and sustain long-term demand for local travel through combined marketing initiatives like golf tour series, mall activations, media promotions and also church activations.
