Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja has formed a task committee to assess, examine, and propose health-care improvements in the county. Olive Mugenda, former vice chancellor of Kenyatta University, will preside over the group while Jairus Musumba will serve as secretary.

Mercy Mwangangi, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Amref Africa, Githinji Gitahi, Karei Mwenda, Dorcas Kemunto, and others are part of the committee

The task force must complete and deliver its report and recommendations to Sakaja within 45 days of its appointment, according to a statement he made on Wednesday, September 13.

“In the performance of its mandate, the Taskforce may, as the need arises co-opt persons to advise or offer assistance on any area the Taskforce may consider necessary,” Sakaja said.

Prof. Olive Mugenda is the immediate former Vice-Chancellor of Kenyatta University. She led the institution’s transformation in many areas while serving as the Vice-Chancellor from 2006 to March 2016, including increased student enrollment, infrastructure development and expansion, employee welfare, and the introduction of market-driven programmes. She successfully transformed the university into a research and entrepreneurial institution and promoted innovation in teaching, management, and research.

Kenya Healthcare Federation Salutes President Ruto’s Health Reform Commitments

Kenya’s healthcare system consists of a number of systems, including governmental, private, faith-based, and NGO systems. Nearly 48 per cent are public and controlled by the Ministry of Health, 41 per cent are in the private sector, 8 per cent are run by religious organisations, and 3 per cent are managed by NGOs.

Some challenges facing Nairobi’s health care system include corruption, inadequate medical equipment and medication, a limited number of public medical facilities, and industrial actions by health workers.

The task force is anticipated to involve members of the public, county employees, and other stakeholders in order to analyse residents’ access to high-quality healthcare services, evaluate the condition of all public health facilities, and examine the management of the supply chain for pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical products.

The committee will also review the current human resource capability and identify any gaps and evaluate the current level of health information management and offer suggestions for a thorough health information management system.
