The Ethics Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has confirmed the arrest of Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) employee Javason Kimemia Maina, for presenting forged academic certificates to secure employment at the agency.

Investigations revealed that Maina falsified a KCSE certificate from Kimuri Secondary School. Maina appeared before the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court following the Director of Public Prosecutions’ agreement with the Commission’s recommendations to prosecute him for fraudulent acquisition of public funds, amounting to KES 293,240.94 in salary paid by REREC, forgery, and use of a false document.

He was granted release on a bond of KES 700,000 or a cash bail of KES 400,000, with the requirement of a surety of the same amount.

The case is scheduled for a pre-trial conference on February 26, 2024.

Simultaneously, the Commission is reviewing the PSC Report on Academic and Professional Certificate Verification to determine appropriate enforcement measures against approximately 2000 public officials who obtained employment through fraudulent means by falsifying their academic credentials.

Additionally, the Commission will investigate reports alleging that certain public entities failed to submit the names of employees with forged certificates to the Public Service Commission. Any government agency heads found complicit in shielding individuals with fraudulent academic qualifications will face disciplinary action.”
