President Ruto announces major changes in KDF leadership

President William Ruto of Kenya has initiated alterations in the leadership structure of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).

These changes, revealed on Friday, March 8, involved the promotion of several generals to pivotal roles within the military.

According to the announcements, Major General Charles Muriu Kahariri has been elevated to the rank of Lieutenant General and designated as the Vice Chief of the Defence Forces. This promotion follows the conclusion of Lieutenant General Jonah Maina Mwangi’s 42-year tenure.

Additionally, Major General David Kimaiyo Tarus has been promoted to Lieutenant General and appointed as the Commander Kenya Army, succeeding Lieutenant General Peter Mbogo Njiru, who served for 39 years. Prior to assuming this role, Lieutenant General David Kimaiyo Tarus served as the Deputy Army Commander.

Furthermore, Major General Jimson Longiro has been promoted to Lieutenant General and appointed as the Vice Chancellor of the National Defence University – Kenya, succeeding his previous role as the Commander Kenya Navy.

As part of these adjustments, Brigadier Thomas Njoroge Ng’ang’a has been promoted to Major General and appointed as the Commander Kenya Navy, transitioning from his previous position as the Base Commander of Kenya Navy Base Manda.
