The Directorate of Criminal investigations has announced the arrest of a police officer, identified as Edgar Opollo. The suspect is currently in custody following his alleged involvement in a violent robbery on February 3.
According to the DCI, Opollo was apprehended by members of the public after a confrontation, with assistance from Kisii Central police officers who intervened. The incident occurred when Opollo was found amidst a flurry of attacks from the enraged crowd.
“Upon investigation, authorities discovered that Opollo had robbed a smartphone from a student at Kisii University. Upon searching him, they recovered the stolen phone. Opollo was subsequently arrested and taken to the police station,”DCI stated.
The DCI added that they had been pursuing an armed gang of three individuals who had previously robbed KES 40,000 from the PEPS Mini Supermarket on January 2, located at Corner Mbaya area, Kisii County.
“CCTV footage captured the incident, revealing three robbers, two of whom were armed with weapons—a pistol and an AK47—while the third wore police attire, though his status as an officer was not immediately evident,”DCI said.
“Following Opollo’s arrest, an identification parade was conducted, during which the supermarket owner identified him as one of the perpetrators involved in the earlier robbery.”
DCI further stated that further investigations disclosed that Opollo is a member of the General Service Unit (GSU) deployed in Kisii.
Currently, Opollo remains hospitalized under police supervision at a Kisii hospital as he awaits interrogation and arraignment on charges of robbery with violence.
