NTSA launches multi-agency operation against illegal motor vehicle practices

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has issued a directive requiring motor vehicle dealers to register unregistered vehicles by December 16, 2024, as part of a compliance crackdown.

The NTSA, in collaboration with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), the Financial Reporting Centre (FRC), the Directorate of Immigration Services (DIS), and security agencies, conducted a multi-agency revalidation exercise. This initiative aimed to ensure adherence to the Traffic Act, Cap 403, and identify non-compliant motor vehicle dealers operating illegally within Kenya.

“Several motor vehicle dealers were found to be holding unregistered vehicles within their premises, contrary to the requirements of the law,” the NTSA stated in its notice. The agency emphasized that dealers must submit pending motor vehicle registration applications by the deadline, failing which the vehicles will be impounded.

To support enforcement, law enforcement agencies have been authorized to seize vehicles operating without registration plates, including those with Kenya Dealer (KD) plates. The NTSA noted that the public and dealers can access information about KD plates and registration statuses via the agency’s online licensing platform.

The crackdown is expected to enhance road safety, promote accountability, and curb potential misuse of unregistered vehicles. The NTSA urged all stakeholders to comply promptly, noting, “This exercise is critical to ensuring compliance with relevant provisions of the law and weeding out illegal operators.”

Motor vehicle dealers and owners were also advised to use NTSA offices or Huduma Centre help desks for inquiries regarding the registration process.
