NBA to build 100 basketball courts in Kenya over the next decade

President William Ruto has secured a partnership with the National Basketball Association (NBA) to construct 100 basketball courts across Kenya over the next decade. This initiative is part of a broader effort to nurture local basketball talent and expand the sport’s presence in the country.

The NBA’s involvement will focus on building courts in schools and communities nationwide, with the goal of promoting basketball at the grassroots level. President Ruto emphasized the impact of the project, stating, “The National Basketball Association (NBA) of the United States will construct 100 basketball courts in schools and communities across Kenya over the next decade to promote the sport.”

This announcement came following a meeting with NBA Deputy Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer Mark Tatum at State House. Also in attendance were five-time NBA champion Derek Fisher and the U.S. Ambassador to Kenya. During the meeting, the President highlighted the importance of fostering young talent, stating that the project will “nurture basketball talent throughout the country.”

In addition to the courts, the NBA will also establish a regional hub in Kenya, further solidifying the country’s position as a focal point for basketball development in Africa. This development builds on previous collaborations between NBA Africa and Kenyan sports officials. In September 2023, NBA Africa CEO Victor Williams signed an agreement with then-Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba to train local school teachers and coaches in modern basketball techniques. The agreement also included plans to develop basketball infrastructure in schools and communities, as well as an elite arena for high-level matches.
