The National Museums of Kenya announced on Tuesday the temporary closure of the Nairobi National Museum Galleries for maintenance purposes.
The closure, as outlined in a notice by the Museums of Kenya, is scheduled from Monday, March 11, through Thursday, March 14, to facilitate fumigation services at the historical museum.
“Normal operations will resume on Friday, March 15, 2024, from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm,” stated the notice.
While the Nairobi Snake Park will remain open during its usual operational hours of 8:30 am to 5:30 pm, the closure aims to ensure a pest-free environment within the museum premises.
“We apologize for any inconvenience caused. We look forward to providing the best experience for you at the Nairobi National Museum,” the notice further conveyed.
Fumigation services are commonly employed by museums worldwide to safeguard artworks, books, wooden artifacts, and furnishings.
The Nairobi National Museum serves as a custodian of the country’s rich heritage, offering educational and recreational opportunities for visitors, along with shopping and dining amenities and botanical gardens.
Featuring both temporary and permanent galleries, the museum attracts learners and tourists alike. Notable permanent galleries include the Cradle of Humankind Gallery, the Story of Mammals, the History of Kenya, the Cycles of Life Gallery, the Numismatic Exhibition, and the Asian African Heritage Exhibition Gallery.
Originally situated at the present-day Nyayo House, the museum relocated to a larger edifice in 1922, now occupied by the Nairobi Serena Hotel.
Following extensive modernization and expansion, the national museum closed its doors for three years in 2005, reopening in June 2008 as the Nairobi National Museum.
