In a significant legal dispute, activist Boniface Mwangi, has initiated a defamation lawsuit against Thika town constituency parliamentary aspirant Francis Gaitho. The case, filed in the Chief Magistrates Court, highlights the growing tensions in Kenya’s political landscape, particularly surrounding issues of integrity and public discourse.

Mwangi’s lawyer, James Kamau, described the application as urgent, stating, “The statements made by Gaitho are not only damaging but also misleading, and they require immediate attention.” He emphasized the need to address the allegations swiftly to mitigate further reputational harm.

On July 23, 2024, Gaitho reportedly posted a message on his X account, criticizing Mwangi and others, claiming they had “hijacked the movement for personal gain.” He labeled them as “shameless profiteers,” suggesting that their actions had diluted the movement’s integrity. “These accusations are baseless and serve only to tarnish the reputations of those committed to genuine change,” Kamau added.

Further compounding the issue, on July 29, Gaitho allegedly republished another statement, accusing Mwangi and two associates of “enjoying donor money.” This accusation has intensified scrutiny on Mwangi, who has previously been a vocal advocate for transparency and accountability in Kenyan politics. “Such claims undermine the very principles of transparency that I stand for,” Mwangi stated. “I will not allow my name to be dragged through the mud without a fight.”
