The Ministry of Health has announced plans to establish the Kenya National Public Health Institute and to also develop 29 emergency operation centers nationwide.
Dr. Sultani Matendechero, Acting Director General of Health at the State Department for Public Health, announced these efforts during his speech at the 8th AFENET Scientific Conference in Mombasa.

“One of the central elements of the initiative is the ambitious plan to extend universal health coverage to every village, involving the engagement of more than 100,000 community health promoters,” said the Acting Director General
The conference also served as a platform to address various pressing issues, including the need to strengthen local health product production, the impact of climate change on health, exploring economic potential, cross-border surveillance, antimicrobial stewardship, and the digitization of health systems to enhance public health.
Climate change was discussed at length, and the serious health challenge it poses including disease outbreaks and the control of disease-carrying vectors.
The promotion of antimicrobial stewardship, increased domestic investment in health, and the digitization of health systems were also discussed as critical measures to improve public health outcomes in Kenya.

The government also promised to train over 250 epidemiologists, comitting to fulfill the World Health Organization’s recommendation of having one epidemiologist per 200,000 population.
