A 29-year-old man, identified as Newton Kengere, who was accused of impersonating former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko and engaging in fraudulent activities targeting unsuspecting members of the public has been released on a KES 300,000 cash bail.
The charges were brought forth in a Nairobi court, where Kengere, upon appearing before Milimani senior principal magistrate Gilbert Shikwe, pleaded not guilty to allegations of cybersquatting.
The accusations against Kengere assert that he illicitly established a Facebook account under the name “Hon. Mike Mbuvi Sonko Rescue Loans,” purportedly without the authorization of the former governor.
During the court proceedings, the prosecution refrained from objecting to Kengere’s release on bail but urged Magistrate Shikwe to take into consideration the gravity of the offense. The accused was apprehended in Kisii’s Riokindo ward by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) following a thorough investigation.
In an alleged transgression, he faces accusations of defrauding public funds through a fraudulent educational loan scheme.
During his case hearing Kengere requested lenient bond terms, emphasizing his humble background. The magistrate granted his release on a cash bail of Sh300,000. The case is scheduled for mention on January 29.
