Kelvin Kiptum, the late world marathon record holder, has been formally inducted into the prestigious Talanta Hall of Fame in a ceremony presided over by Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba at Talanta Plaza, Nairobi.
In attendance was Kiptum’s son, Caleb Kigen, who joined Ababu in unveiling the ceremony to honor one of Kenya’s most illustrious marathon runners and the current world record holder.
“Together with Kiptum’s son Caleb Kigen, I led the unveiling ceremony to celebrate one of Kenya’s greatest marathon runners and the current world record holder,”Ababu said.
Highlighting the significance of the occasion, Ababu remarked, “This is special because it is the very first formal induction, and Kelvin becomes the first of our legends to be formally inducted in this Hall of Fame and stands here as a permanent heritage to this incredible contribution.”
“This is a proud and poignant moment as we celebrate the induction of a promising athlete who departed this world in his prime.”
Emphasizing the prestige of the Talanta Hall of Fame, Ababu stated, “The Talanta Hall of Fame is a prestigious platform celebrating excellence in the realm of creativity, sports, and innovation.”
Kiptum’s name will now join the ranks of other iconic legends in the sports and creative economy sector within the Hall of Fame, including Joe Kadenge (football), Paul Tergat (athletics), and Ngugi wa Thiong’o (author), among others.
The induction serves as a testament to Kenya’s acknowledgment of athletes and talented youth as ambassadors and driving forces for the country’s development.
“We celebrated Kiptum in life, and we will continue to celebrate him in death,” wrote Ababu, who met with Kiptum’s family and that of his late coach, Hakizamana.
Kiptum tragically passed away on February 11 in a road accident at the age of 24, just before he was scheduled to participate in the Rotterdam Marathon on April 14.
The accident, which occurred in the Kaptagat area along the Elgeyo Marakwet-Ravine road, also claimed the life of Kiptum’s Rwandese coach, Gervais Hakizimana.
Kiptum was laid to rest on Friday, February 23.
His remarkable achievement in breaking the marathon world record by 34 seconds at the Chicago Marathon on October 8, 2023, led to his nomination for the 2023 Sportsman of the Year.
Initially slated for February 23, the 20th Sports Personality of the Year Awards (SOYA) Gala was rescheduled to March 1 to allow for the celebration of Kiptum’s life.
