KRA introduces mobile verification steps for enhanced iTax security

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has issued a public notice mandating all registered taxpayers to authenticate their mobile numbers linked to the iTax system. This update is part of KRA’s ongoing efforts to strengthen security and maintain accurate taxpayer records, following an initial “Taxpayer Register Data Clean Up Exercise” in June 2024.

The notice outlines the authentication procedure in a step-by-step process, aimed at ensuring the mobile phone numbers registered in iTax are verified and up-to-date. Taxpayers are required to authenticate their mobile contact details upon logging into iTax, using their PIN and password to access the system.

According to the notice, if the mobile number displayed within iTax is correct and the preferred contact for the taxpayer, they should select the “send verification code” option, at which point a code will be sent to the displayed number. “If the mobile telephone number displayed is accurate and the preferred number, click on ‘send verification code’ and a code will be sent to the displayed mobile phone number,” the KRA advised in its notice.

In cases where the displayed mobile number is outdated or incorrect, taxpayers are advised to update the contact information by entering their preferred mobile number. After updating, they can click on the verification option to receive a code, which they must then enter into the system to complete the authentication process. “Change the number on the displayed pop-up to your preferred phone number and then click on ‘send the verification code’,” the KRA instructs.
