Kenyan man by the name Kevin Kang’ethe who was accused of murdering his girlfriend at a U.S. airport, has fled police custody in Nairobi.

The 40-year-old suspect vanished from Muthaiga Police Station following his court appearance on January 31. Reports indicate that a person purporting to be Kang’ethe’s attorney visited him at the station, and authorities permitted him to exit his cell to meet the supposed lawyer.

According to Nairobi Police Boss Adason Bungei Kang’ethe mysteriously vanished from a police station, prompting a manhunt. He further stated that four officers and a lawyer present at the station at the time of his disappearance have been detained in connection with the incident.

Kang’ethe became the primary suspect in the murder of Margaret Mbitu, his girlfriend, who resided in Massachusetts prior to her demise in November 2023. Mbitu’s body was discovered within a vehicle in a Boston airport parking garage.

Following the incident, Kang’ethe disappeared for three months, prompting Massachusetts law enforcement to issue a red notice for his apprehension. A red notice serves as a global request to law enforcement agencies to locate and temporarily detain an individual pending extradition, surrender, or legal proceedings.

On January 29, Kang’ethe was apprehended by Kenyan authorities while at a club in the Westlands Area, following a public tip-off. It is purported that Kang’ethe and Mbitu were previously in a relationship that had ended, and he had arranged to meet her at the airport before departing for Nairobi.

Forensic examination of the case revealed that Mbitu had sustained knife wounds to her neck, face, and side near the chest area. She was pronounced dead upon arrival at a Boston hospital after law enforcement discovered her body at the airport.
