John Matara faces additional charges of robbery and rape

John Matara, the man accused of the murder of socialite Starlet Wahu, faced charges of rape and robbery with violence at Ruiru Law Courts.

During a hearing before Magistrate Charles Mwaniki, Matara was accused of committing the crimes on May 16, 2023.

According to the charge sheet presented in court on Wednesday, Matara allegedly robbed his victim, Sh88,300, at Kahawa Wendani, armed with a kitchen knife. The robbery included Sh18,300 from M-pesa, Sh30,000 in cash, a phone valued at KES 25,000, and another worth KES 15,000.

Additionally, Matara is accused of taking the victim’s ID, international passport, and family bank ATM card, using violence in the process.

Matara also faces charges of rape and sexual assault. The sexual assault charge states that he unlawfully manipulated the victim’s legs for penetration on the same day and location.

Matara denied all charges, maintaining his innocence. His lawyer, Samuel Ayora, requested reasonable bond terms and a surety option, citing Matara’s fixed residence and low flight risk.

Ayora also reported Matara’s alleged physical assault by DCI officers during transportation from Industrial Area, urging the court to provide medical treatment and submit a medical report.

Prosecutor Ms. Moraa opposed the bond request, citing another pending case and ongoing investigations into similar matters. She argued that granting bond could lead to witness interference and case tampering. Moraa also stated the state’s need for Matara’s DNA.

The court ordered Matara to report the alleged assault at Ruiru police station and undergo medical treatment and a DNA test. The decision on bond release is scheduled for Friday, March 8, 2024.
