Zanzibar has officially approved Kenyan low-cost carrier Jambojet to commence direct flights between Mombasa and the island, effective July 1, 2024.
The airline’s service on this route will encompass four weekly flights, offering affordable fares starting from USD 113 for one-way travel.
Karanja Ndegwa, the Managing Director and CEO of Jambojet, acclaimed the inauguration of this new route as a momentous achievement for the airline, coinciding with its imminent 10th anniversary in April.
Recognized as the foremost low-cost carrier in Africa at the 2023 World Travel Awards, Jambojet has catered to over seven million passengers, with 44 percent being first-time flyers.
Dr. Khalid Salum Mohamed, Zanzibar’s Minister of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transport, expressed optimism regarding Jambojet’s flight introduction, foreseeing a surge in international visitors to the island.
Dr. Mohamed highlighted the substantial tourist and business traveler demographic in Zanzibar, aligning with the island’s strategic objective of bolstering the blue economy and attracting a broader tourist base.
“Expanding infrastructure is vital to realizing our objectives and remains a top national priority,” emphasized Dr. Mohamed.
Mr. Ndegwa underscored that the decision to establish the Mombasa-Zanzibar route stemmed from escalating demand and the pursuit of commercial opportunities within the region. He reaffirmed Jambojet’s dedication to bridging underserved routes, asserting that the new route would foster closer ties between Kenya and Zanzibar.
During discussions with Dr. Mohamed and other Zanzibar transport officials, Mr. Ndegwa delineated the anticipated benefits of the new route, emphasizing its potential to amplify tourism, trade, and investments. He lauded Zanzibar’s rich cultural heritage and attractions, asserting the island’s enduring appeal to global travelers.
“We are delighted to contribute to this endeavor while showcasing Mombasa’s pristine offerings as our secondary hub,” remarked Mr. Ndegwa.
Jambojet, headquartered in Nairobi as a regional low-cost airline, presently operates flights to seven destinations from its primary hub at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
These destinations encompass Mombasa, Eldoret, Kisumu, Malindi, Ukunda (Diani), Lamu, and Goma in Eastern DRC. Additionally, the airline facilitates cargo operations across its network, with plans to include Zanzibar in its route network from its secondary hub in Mombasa starting July 2024.
