A beginner’s guide to investing in Kenya

Investing is key to building wealth and achieving financial freedom. Kenya offers diverse investment opportunities, catering to both beginners and experienced investors with different risks and returns.

Money Market Funds are low-risk investments that offer stable returns by investing in short-term debt instruments like treasury bills and commercial papers. Most KES MMFs require initial investment of as little as KES 1,000.0 while USD MMFs range between USD 100.0 and USD 1000.0. To invest, open an account with a licensed fund manager such as Cytonn. MMFs are ideal for emergency savings due to their high liquidity and consistent interest earnings.

T-bills and T-bonds are government-backed securities, making them low risk investments. T-bills have maturities of 91, 182, or 364 days, with a minimum investment of KES 50,000.0. T-bonds are long-term investments ranging between 2 to 30 years with a minimum of KES 50,000.0, offering fixed interest payments biannually. To invest in either, you need to open a Central Depository System (CDS) account through the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK). The CBK has made this process easier through its Dhow CSD platform, which allows investors to apply, monitor and manage their government securities online. Alternatively, one can invest through banks or brokers.

Offshore stocks and Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) allows global diversification of your portfolio. Platforms like Hisa App which is CMA regulated allow you to invest in ETFs, offshore and local stocks. These platforms require you to create an account, complete the Know Your Customer (KYC) process and fund your account to begin trading. This opens up opportunities to invest in global giants like Apple, Microsoft or ETFs tracking major indices like the S&P 500.

The NSE allows you to invest in shares of Kenyan companies and Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs). The minimum requirement is 100 shares of your preferred stock. For REITs, the investment minimum is KES 5.0 mn. To get started, open a CDS account with a licensed stockbroker or investment bank. Platforms like NSE’s MyStocks and other licensed brokers enable you to trade stocks and REITs online. The main benefits of REITs is their liquid nature and competitive returns.

Diversifying across these options helps manage risk while maximizing returns. Investors should always research thoroughly, consult financial advisors if needed and align your investments with your financial goals and risk appetite.
